Flirting can be fun and harmless. It’s a fun way to get to know someone that you might be interested in, as well as to enjoy some casual bantering. However, once you’re married, flirting with someone other than your spouse can be a difficult situation to be in. If you are married and flirting, when it is okay to enjoy a causal flirtation and where should you draw the line?
There are some people that are natural flirts. They might not even realize that they are doing it. In fact, most of the time if they’re natural flirts they’re surprised when someone points out to them that they have been flirting. Sometimes, however, flirting can go too far.
It can be difficult for both members of the opposite sex to read signs. For this reason, if you are married and flirting then problems can be created that you never intended. For instance, if you are enjoying a casual flirtation with someone and suddenly they are propositioning you for something more, the situation might become awkward and uncomfortable. In addition, the other person might become embarrassed to find out that those weren’t your intentions all along.
On the other hand, flirting with someone else might also cause problems with your spouse if your spouse doesn’t fully understand your intentions behind the flirting. This is especially true if you have crossed a line in the past and participated in an extra marital affair. Although the flirting might be innocent, if your spouse has had to deal with marital infidelities before then the flirting could open up new issues that you just don’t want to deal with.
Of course, sometimes flirting really is innocent and both partners are aware of it. Some people enjoy watching other people flirt with their spouses because it makes their partner appear desirable. As long as nothing comes out of the flirting, and both partners understand this, then flirting can be acceptable.
However, once the flirting starts taking on sexual connotations then the line gets a little fuzzier. Sometimes, sexual innuendos, especially when you’re married and flirting, are not considered innocent flirting. In fact, they might appear to be come-ons by both the person you are flirting with as well as your spouse.
Actively seeking ways to flirt might also be a sign that your relationship is in trouble. This is particularly true when it comes to the Internet. Although it’s perfectly acceptable to start having a conversation in a chat room that revolves around your hobbies, interests, and work, actively seeing a singles chat room or joining a website that promises to match married people up with other married people for extramarital affairs is crossing a line. Even if you have no intentions of following through with anything you should question why you are seeking this attention in the first place.
Flirting can be harmless and fun, as long as both partners are aware that it’s not going to go any further than entertaining banter. However, if someone wants to take it further than that, then problems can arise. Being honest with your spouse, and communicating any concerns that you might have, is always a good policy. It is also important to listen to your spouse when they have concerns. Although they might sound silly, especially when you think that nothing is going to come out of the flirtation, the concerns might be very real to your spouse and it is important to listen to them.
