A Guide to Understanding Flirting Signals

Flirting signals have been used since the beginning of time. Granted, back before fire was invented, a flirting signal might have been something as bold as dropping a saber-toothed tiger at the foot of the female with “birthing hips”. Now-a-days we tend to be a bit more subtle, but sometimes so much so that it’s difficult to tell if we’re really getting the hint or if it’s just wishful thinking. This guide aims to point out some of the obvious and the not-so-obvious flirting signals to help some of us out there who just can’t figure out if we’re getting the green light.

Does that someone make eye-contact and/or smile at you from across the room? Getting your attention—and holding it long enough for you to realize you’ve made a connection—is definitely a sign that they’re into you.

They just keep walking by you. This one is a bit more obvious than some other flirting signals. If you’re at a party and you notice him/her has walked by you a few times (making eye contact and smiling, if you’re lucky!), that means they are trying to encourage you to notice them. Good to go!

He or she pays extra close attention to how they look. This may mean running fingers through the hair, straightening a top or jacket, or even making adjustments to stocking or socks. The more they try to spruce themselves up, the more concerned they are about your reaction. Another go.

He or she moves into your vicinity. Nothing says “I wanna get to know you” better than someone coming to stand or sit near you. They’re giving you the opportunity to further the flirtation by making a move of your own.

If it’s a girl, she might touch her hair while she’s near you—whether or not a conversation has been initiated. This is an age-old flirting technique that dates back to times when men drew pictures of buffalo on cave walls. Some believe that when a woman fluffs her hair, it releases her “scent” to intrigue the male. Most of the time, this is performed totally subconsciously.

They make physical contact. They might try to play it off as one of those, “Oops! I didn’t see you there—can I buy you a drink?” moments, or it might be purposeful, such as grazing your arm while they speak to you. This is a definite sign that they are into you. What better way to get a “feel” for someone than seeing how the chemistry flies when you touch?

It might help for you to understand that flirting is definitely not a totally conscious thing. In fact, most of it is performed purely off of instinct. Women try to draw attention to their hips in a subconscious effort to ply their baby-making wares, and men are subconsciously interested in that. Ask a single guy if he wants kids and he is probably going to laugh, but it is definitely a large part of his instinct. The same goes for guys. They draw attention to themselves by being confident—a good sign of someone who will be a fine provider and protector.

Flirting has taken many shapes over the years, and in many ways, we cut ourselves short. Flirting (aka “wooing”) used to be a very skilled art in which a great deal of thought, effort, and time was put into. In the Victorian era, women took great pains not to seem too interested OR too cold. It was okay to make a man work a little for the glimpse of an ankle. –But now it seems no one has time for artful games of flirtation. Many people are ready to cut to the chase with flirting signals, so don’t panic. If you pay attention, you’ll notice the green light when you see it. Good luck!
